James R. Fitzroy, CGCS
James R. Fitzroy, CGCS, was elected GCSAA’s 74th president, Feb. 12, 2010, at the association’s annual meeting in San Diego. He also serves as secretary for The Environmental Institute for Golf (the philanthropic organization
of the GCSAA) Board of Trustees.
A 43-year GCSAA member, Fitzroy has been the director/superintendent at the Wollaston Recreational Facility/Presidents Golf Course in North Quincy, Mass., since 1975. Previously, he was superintendent at Pleasant Valley Country Club in Sutton, Mass., and Cazenovia (N.Y.) Country Club.
In 1967, he earned an associate’s degree in turf management from the Stockbridge School of Agriculture at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass., and a bachelor’s degree in park administration from Massachusetts in 1970.
Fitzroy is a member and past president of the GCSA of New England and also holds membership in the Golf Course Managers Association of Cape Cod, as well as the Rhode Island GCSA. He is a former member of the executive committee of the Massachusetts Golf Association and currently serves on that organization’s course rating team. He also serves on the plant science advisory committee for the Norfolk County Agricultural High School and UMass’s turf research building committee.
A native of Hinsdale, Mass., Fitzroy and his wife, Maureen, reside in Plainville, Mass. They have eight grandchildren.
