The University of Georgia offers distance-based professional development programs for the green industry. The university's current courses are self-paced and require students to pass two proctored exams.

Successful graduates of the Principles of Turfgrass Management certificate program earn CEUs from the University of Georgia, as well as 12 education points from GCSAA. Warm-season and cool-season turf are covered. The course is available in both English and Spanish.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and GCSAA have created a distance education program designed to enable golf course superintendents anywhere in the world to achieve graduate-level training or complete a master’s degree.

For superintendents who have attained a bachelor's degree, there are two options, each with an informal concentration in turfgrass management.
