July is Family Golf Month

Families across the country are encouraged to play golf together during “July is Family Golf Month”, a PGA Play Golf America program designed to provide a structured, yet casual opportunity for families to learn the game of golf together. Golfing enthusiasts and Grammy award winners Vince Gill and Amy Grant, along with their six-year-old daughter, Corrina, are the spokesfamily for the program.

“Vince Gill and Amy Grant have always been great ambassadors for the game of golf. Now, they are sharing their passion with their daughter,” said PGA of America President Brian Whitcomb. “We truly appreciate their support and know their involvement will inspire families everywhere to find PGA Professionals participating in ‘July is Family Golf Month.’”

Facilities participating in “July is Family Golf Month,” will offer family golf clinics and play days for a nominal fee, as well as programs such as Take Your Daughter to the Course Week (July 9-15) and Bring Your Kids to the Golf Range.

Other confirmed family programs for 2007 include Family Golf Month grass roots programs such as Family Golf Clinics, Family Play Days, Kids Play Free Programs, and Family Golf Leagues. Host PGA Professionals may also customize additional programs that best fit their facility, resources and style such as 3-, 6-, or 9-hole scrambles, family golf tees and score cards or a family cookout to celebrate the day.

Consumers will be able to find a complete list of facilities participating in “July is Family Golf Month,” along with details on specific events and online registration, by zip code on the Play Golf America Web site at http://www.PlayGolfAmerica.com/.

Centennial campaign launched for Tufts Archives

With the U.S. Women's Open at Pine Needles Golf Club this week, golf course architect Donald Ross' name is on golfer's minds. So it's appropriate that the Tufts Archives is taking the opportunity to remind them of its centennial campaign--2007 is the 100th anniversary of completion of one of Ross’ most famous creations – the No. 2 Course at Pinehurst.

Located in Pinehurst, N.C, the Tufts Archives preserves over 300 of Ross’ original field sketches and course layouts as well as notations and correspondence regarding his designs, including Pinehurst No. 2 and Pine Needles Golf Club. In celebration of the centennial anniversary, the archives has launched a nationwide campaign to generate broader public awareness of, and financial support for, the important contributions Ross and Pinehurst have made to the game of golf.

The privately funded archives are the only institution dedicated to the preservation of Ross’ legacy, the traditions of golf and Pinehurst’s historical heritage. The archives also serve as a resource for historical information sought by golf course architects, golf writers and golf enthusiasts the world over.

A central part of the campaign is a solicitation of financial support for the Archives endowment.  Targeted, in addition to the public at large, are individuals, country clubs, golf courses and golf-related organizations familiar with Ross’ designs and have a strong interest in the traditions of golf exemplified by Ross’ unique creations.

Those wishing to support the campaign may do so by sending their tax deductible contribution to:

WSGA and PNGA purchase golf course from Weyerhaeuser

The Washington State Golf Association and Pacific Northwest Golf Association have acquired a new golf course in Dupont, Wash., from the Weyerhaeuser Co.

Home course

The newly constructed course will be named “The Home Course” and is slated to open for public play on Friday, June 29. It boasts five sets of tees ranging from the forward tees at 5,506 yards, to middle tees at 6,139 yards, and back tees of  7,437 yards. Panoramic views of Puget Sound, the Olympics and Mount Rainier are present throughout the golf course.

“This is the realization of a longstanding dream of our two associations,” said WSGA and PNGA Executive Director, John Bodenhamer. “The WSGA and PNGA have worked cooperatively for almost two decades to create a permanent home for golf in the Northwest and we are thrilled it is now a reality. We shall be forever grateful to the Weyerhaeuser Co. for providing us with the opportunity to develop our vision at this historic and remarkable property.”

The Home Course will eventually house the offices of the WSGA, PNGA and USGA activities in the Northwest, as well as other allied golf associations. It will be a home for junior golf programs, environmental stewardship and turfgrass research. Each year, The Home Course will also serve as the venue for some WSGA and PNGA championships and United States Golf Association (USGA) national championship sectional qualifiers.

The property on which the course is located has a long and rich history. Several Native-American tribes, known collectively as the Salish people, inhabited the area for thousands of years. For more about the course and its history, click here.
