Left page or right page: Placement won't leave your ad unseen
Ad location has little to do with readership according to a study of ratings from 274 left page ads and 1,084 right page ads. The average "Saw" ratings showed a 4 percentage point difference between left and right page ad position (68% vs. 64%) which is not statistically significant, and indicates that location is not an influence on "Saw" ratings.
Stressing location as the main contributor to an ad being seen neglects the importance of the content of the ad. A visually interesting ad can attract readership wherever it is located in a publication. Left page placement will not have a negative impact on an ad's success. Conversely, right page placement will not have a positive impact on the ad's success.
Instead of turning to location preferences to boost ad performance, advertisers may have better luck focusing on ad content.
