How to be assertive

Whether you are negotiating jobs or salaries or simply explaining golf facility practices to golfers or staff members, how you communicate contributes to the success of what you say.

  • Be sure to maintain eye contact.
  • Stand up straight if it is necessary to stand.
  • Be careful not to cross your arms or your legs.
  • Avoid rocking back and forth; keep a steady, balanced stance.
  • Don’t blame—use “I messages,” not “you messages.”
  • Stick to your point.
  • Be clear and direct.
