Hiring a professional staff
Starting the new job
The candidate has accepted your offer and has agreed to a starting date. However, the hiring process does not end there. Many forms and personnel issues have to be dealt with before the employee begins or within the first week of employment.
A good orientation program can help a new employee realize his/her full obligation. An effective program will have several key components to:
- Let the new employee know what the company offers.
- Let the new employee know what the company expects of him or her. These basic policies and procedures usually are found in the Employee Handbook.
- Provide employees information on whom to see for help or information.
- Introduce the new employee to co-workers, supervisors and the facility.
If your organization does not have a human resources or personnel department,
it may fall to the shoulders of the golf course superintendent to obtain
and release all of the necessary forms for the new employee’s
personnel file. Click here for a Personnel
File Checklist .
Discuss the organization’s performance appraisal system with the new employee. Be sure the employee understands what the review will cover and during what times of the year the evaluations occur. If performance is tied to merit increases, be sure the employee is aware of this up front so there will be no surprises at review time.
