What should you offer an intern beyond education?
After you develop the educational component of your internship program, the next step is to define your compensation and benefits package. Following are some typical benefits superintendents provide to student interns.
- Hourly Wage—depending upon experience, may range from $5.15 to $10.00 per hour.
- Housing - provide at little or no cost. (It may be more economical to hire two interns and have them share housing. Consider housing on the course to eliminate travel costs and time.)
- Bonus - structured to reward those who stay through the agreed-upon completion date.
- Transportation allowance - for those interns, who do not need housing, this helps defray the costs traveling to and from the job.
- Golf privileges - during specified times.
- Meal allowance - usually one meal per day on site.
- Uniforms - provide at no charge and include cleaning.
