I couldn’t get very far into this list without highlighting GCSAA-affiliated chapters. Affiliated chapters are the lifeblood of GCSAA. Without strong chapters, GCSAA doesn’t exist. There are currently 98 affiliated chapters across the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. Each of which with its own unique personality and character.
10. GCSAA Affiliated Chapters
Chapters are run by volunteer boards and in some cases with the help of chapter staff. These chapter leaders are responsible for several items each year including annual reporting, financial management and filing the proper forms with the IRS.
This isn’t their only responsibility, however. Chapter leaders want to ensure each member is getting the most out of their membership. Many hours are spent in the board room strategically planning for the coming years. This includes reviewing event schedules, looking at chapter committees, working with local representatives and allied associations to promote the profession, and of course, working with the chapter members themselves.
Chapter leaders take time from their lives to give back to the industry. Volunteering their time for the success of the chapter, and in turn, the success of the golf course superintendent, these guys and gals continue to advance the industry through their commitment and dedication.
Local chapters allow golf course superintendents to gain valuable continuing education, connect with peers, learn from each other, and create relationships that will better themselves — both professionally and personally — and their facilities.
Local chapters really are the lifeblood of GCSAA and do so much to better the lives of their members. I know I can speak for my field staff counterparts when I say working with members at the local level is the best part of the gig. It never surprises me when I step foot in a chapter board meeting and see the passion these members have firsthand. They really do want to better the profession and better the lives of their fellow members – and often, they do just that.
If you haven’t checked in with your local chapter board or attended a local chapter event lately, I suggest you do. I guarantee you will have a good time, meet someone new, forge a relationship and learn something you can take back to your facility. Local chapters do so much to support our profession, the least we can do is support those who support us.
