Back here for lucky 13. Last week I highlighted the GCSAA retirement resources. Sticking with the resources theme, this week I’m highlighting the career resources available for GCSAA members.
13. Career Resources
Now, I know the term career resources is broad, so what exactly do I mean by this? Well, the career resources I’m highlighting focus on the following:
- Resume Tips and Cover Letter Tips
- At no charge to GCSAA members, our resume professionals will look through your current resume (and cover letter drafts) and make suggestions for you to improve your documents.
- Portfolios
- Not necessarily included in every job application, however, if the need or want to include a career portfolio exists, we have tips and tricks to help you put one together.
- Interviewing Tips
- It’s natural to be nervous during the interview process. GCSAA has compiled tips and proven strategies to help you get prepared to succeed in interviewing. The more prepared you are, the less nervous you will be.
- Professional Presentations Guide
- As professionals, superintendents communicate with diverse audiences and speak at various functions. Whether it’s an informal budget report to your employer or the green committee, a program presented at a chapter meeting or GCSAA student chapter group, or a formal presentation to a community organization, public speaking is an important professional skill.
- Like any other professional skill, these skills are learned and perfected through experience and practice — not many people are born gifted public speakers. This comprehensive guide walks you through the entire process of delivering a presentation, from how to organize it, to using your body language to drive home your message.
- Negotiating/Accepting the Job
- There is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to negotiating and accepting the position. There are some guidelines, however, to ensure you are prepared for this important step in the hiring process.
Now, obviously this doesn’t encompass all a respective job search entails, as each search will have its own procedure and process. I do hope these resources will help give you a leg up when you’re going after your dream job or looking to make a career move.
