Last week, I highlighted GCSAA webinars and continuing education. I felt this week was a natural progression into the Assistant Superintendent Certificate Series (ASCS) as webinars are required for the Leadership and Communications certificate.
21. Assistant Superintendent Certificate Series
The ASCS was created to offer assistant superintendents an opportunity to grow within the industry while continuing to hone their skills and knowledge, become well-versed in the key areas of golf course management and prepare for the next step in their careers.
The ASCS is composed of four certificates covering key competency areas of:
- Agronomy
- Business
- Leadership and Communications (apply this certificate toward earning CGCS)
- Environmental Stewardship
The certificates are golf-centric, available to GCSAA members and non-members, and can be completed in any order. It is recommended assistant superintendents have at least two years of work experience before beginning any of the ASCS certificates. However, the certificates are available to all and not limited to assistants.
Additionally, GCSAA member assistant superintendents who have completed all four certificates by June 30 each year are eligible for a scholarship to the Green Start Academy, on behalf of John Deere Golf. GCSAA will provide John Deere with a list of all qualifying assistants who meet the completion criteria. Continue to expand upon your knowledge with this elite professional development opportunity. Participants have up to two years from the completion of their ASCS to apply. Eligibility is for members from the United States or Canada. Assistants who qualify will receive more information in July.
As we head into winter, I encourage assistants – as well as encourage superintendents to encourage their assistants – to look at the ASCS program. I have no doubt assistants will come out the other side better for their participation.
