Podcasts. They’ve been around for a couple decades now. The first one began in 2003 or 2004 – depending on which outlet you read. The term podcast has been around just as long; it was coined in 2004 by combining ‘iPod’ and ‘broadcast’. A report from 2019 stated there were over 700,000 active podcasts with over 29 million episodes – I’m sure both of those number have gone up over the past four years. Reader note: there are numerous reports out there, so depending on which one you’re looking at, there can be as many as 4 million podcasts, so please take these numbers with a grain of salt.
I’m personally a huge fan of podcasts – at least a huge fan of a small percentage of the 700,000+ available. They’re great. They’re portable, you don’t need to be locked to screen to enjoy them, they’re accessible on your phone, you can listen as a secondary activity (such as driving, cooking, cleaning, working out, etc.), and, as you can see with the amount of podcast out there, you’re bound to find one you like.
They also reach a huge audience. According to reports (again there are many reports available), there are nearly half a billion podcast listeners worldwide, with over 160 million in the U.S. alone. What better way to reach these listeners and tell the great story of GCSAA members than through the GCSAA Podcast
45. GCSAA Podcast
Last week I highlighted GCM magazine and how the publication promotes the profession to not only our members, but to allied associations, golfers and the public alike. The GCSAA Podcast does just the same (along with all the great golf course management podcasts out there).
Beginning in September 2018, the first episode featured GCSAA CEO Rhett Evans, the Environmental Leaders in Golf Awards, as well as Ryder Cup course preparations. Fast forward nearly five years, and over 50 episodes of the podcast have been produced. These episodes continue to promote the profession to a larger audience. There are so many great stories in our industry – far too many to name here – and communicating these stories to a larger market helps shine a positive light on GCSAA members.
GCSAA members continue to be leaders both on and off the course, and across many segments of life. Sharing these stories benefits all involved in our great industry.
