Communication is essential in every enterprise, golf course management being no exception. For superintendents, assistants, equipment managers and everyone in between, conveying information clearly is critical for the success of any operation. Whether discussing daily operations with team members or the master plan with board members, ensure your message is relevant and easy to understand. Additionally, don’t hesitate to provide context and justification behind decisions as this can assist you in delivering a clear message.
Aside from being clear, transparency is vital in any relationship, professional or otherwise. Ensuring your team and key stakeholders are informed about golf course management activities, course conditions and operations will build trust among everyone involved.
Face-to-face interactions, text, email, phone call, social media, blogs — with so many communication channels available, make sure you choose the correct one to reach your intended audience. Utilizing a combination of channels will no doubt be most effective and knowing how your audience prefers to communicate will help you tailor your message to the proper channel.
Communication isn’t just about addressing your audience, it’s just as much about listening to them. Actively listening is a key component to effective communication and should be given just as much, if not more of your attention when communicating with others. Responding to their views and incorporating their input will go a long way in establishing a collaborative culture and encourage all involved to communicate openly.
Additionally, communication is a skill that can and will improve with practice. Whether it’s verbal, written or a social media post, don’t hesitate to work on your communication skills. Effective communication is an essential skill to have as a leader. Putting in the work to improve as a communicator as you advance in your career will be time well spent.
