The golf industry thrives not just on the courses, but on the strength of the professionals who manage them. There are many programs in place to assist and highlight the professionalism of golf course superintendents and their teams, and one such example is the EXCEL Leadership Program, an initiative by the GCSAA, designed to empower and elevate the next generation of leaders in turf management.
EXCEL — short for “educating golf industry leaders of tomorrow, cross-training opportunities, creating community leaders who serve more than take, encouraging future leaders through advisory boards and councils, and developing leaders who will mentor others," provides a unique platform for assistant superintendents to develop critical leadership skills beyond agronomics. Sponsored by Nufarm, this three-year program combines hands-on training, networking and professional development opportunities, helping participants grow into well-rounded leaders capable of steering the future of the golf industry.
I had the opportunity to work directly with EXCEL participants last week and I was blown away by the professionalism, proficiency and talent of these future leaders. It’s no surprise that many EXCEL participants land their first superintendent position during their stint in the program, and step into leadership roles with confidence. They are not just managing turf — they are shaping culture, improving sustainability practices and mentoring the next wave of talent.
In a competitive and dynamic field, the GCSAA EXCEL Leadership Program is proving to be a game-changer by investing in people, not just practices.
