I recently reconnected with a friend from many years ago. We had met each other over 30 years ago at a local chapter meeting and we both had a passion for golf course maintenance and playing golf. We played many team events together including several GCSAA National events.
Over the last decade, many things have changed in both of our lives. He lost his wife to cancer and decided to get out of the golf course business and start a new career as a counselor. I managed a 54-hole property for many years that left very little time for friends or playing golf. I also changed lanes from a golf course superintendent to the South Central field staff representative for GCSAA. When we talked on the phone a couple of weeks ago, it was like we had just played golf together recently even though it had been more than a decade ago when we last spoke.
I encourage all that read this to take 15 minutes out of your day and make that phone call to a family member or friend that you have not spoken with in a while and just catch up with each other. None of us are getting any younger and you just never know if there will be time next week or next month to make that call. We all have made many friends in this industry over the years and I am pretty sure all of you have someone that you wonder how they are doing. Take the time, make the call and enjoy catching up with them. I did and I feel good knowing that my friend is doing alright.
