National Women in Golf Month invites participation

This June, GCSAA joins the Executive Women’s Golf Association, LPGA, National Golf Course Owners Association and the PGA of America in sponsoring 2008 American Express Women’s Golf Month supported by Golf for Women magazine.

This month-long initiative will provide women the opportunity to learn, re-learn and/or play golf in a women-friendly environment. Participating host golf facilities will again be asked to offer complimentary golf instruction to women 14 and older, during the month of June. GCSAA members are being encouraged to participate by offering open house events, course tours, discussion groups and other activities that share information about the golf course, including environmental stewardship activities.

To sign up a facility, GCSAA members can visit Play Golf America and work with their LPGA or PGA professional, or golf course owner to register.

A program guide has been developed to assist facilities in organizing a wide-range of activities. The program also offers a variety of communications tips to assist in promoting the facility’s participation.

In the past, this event was scheduled for a week. Extending the promotion to the entire month will give golf facilities more flexibility in offering a variety of activities at their convenience during June. In the previous three years, more than 68,000 women across the country have been introduced or re-introduced to the game of golf during Women’s Golf Week. Spokespeople for the event are LPGA professionals Nancy Lopez and Suzy Whaley.

To view promotion of the event, visit the print advertising and television spots for Women in Golf Month.

Briggs & Stratton launches "Tell Us Your Story" contest

Briggs & Stratton has powered the outdoor life of people around the world for 100 years, and now the company is asking customers to share some of those memories.

As part of its centennial celebration, the world’s largest manufacturer of air-cooled gasoline engines for outdoor power equipment is sponsoring a "Tell Us Your Story" contest, one of many events scheduled to mark the company’s century of innovation and success. The winning entry will receive the "Ultimate Garage Package," which includes a lawnmower, trimmer, generator, leaf blower, lawn tractor, rear tine tiller and other Briggs & Stratton products, valued at $7,500.

"We know that many of our customers feel a connection with our company because our products have been a part of their lives for so long," said John Shiely, chairman, president and CEO of Briggs & Stratton. "They’ve come to know the Briggs & Stratton name because it’s on their lawn mower engines, pressure washers and other products using small engines. Now, we want to hear their stories."

Entries will be judged on originality, creativity and storytelling quality; how well the entrant exhibits passion for Briggs & Stratton products; and the contestant’s specific, relevant and compelling example of how Briggs & Stratton products enrich their life. Entries should capture the core values of Briggs & Stratton: a can-do spirit, a satisfying feeling from a job well done and a desire to pass on knowledge to the next generation.

Entry could include starting a lawn-mowing business powered by Briggs & Stratton engines to save money for college or maintaining a pristine lawn – the envy of the neighborhood – with Briggs & Stratton outdoor equipment. To enter, contestants must be 21 years of age or older and submit a written entry under 200 words and/or a photo online at http://www.briggsandstratton100years.com by July 31, 2008. Complete entry rules are posted on the site as well. In August, Briggs & Stratton will award the winning storyteller with the "Ultimate Garage Package."

CMAA adds Certified Chief Executive designation

The Club Managers Association of America has announced a new designation that will recognize managers who have demonstrated the ability to successfully serve as the most senior manager in a club.

The Certified Chief Executive designation carries with it a set of minimum requirements that must be met and is separate from the Certified Club Manager designation, which is still the hallmark of professionalism within the club industry.

Club managers who qualify for the CCE designation must be active status members of CMAA, have achieved the CCM designation and have served as the top executive in a club for a minimum of five years. In addition, candidates must have earned membership in CMAA's Honor Society and have successfully completed Business Management Institutes IV and V.

"The Certified Chief Executive designation is meant to further distinguish the unique qualifications of the existing Certified Club Manager," said CMAA CEO Jim Singerling.
