The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will require the use of the new Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, initially released Aug. 1, for employers starting Nov. 1 of this year. According to the USCIS, the purpose of the Form I-9 is to “help you verify your employee's identity and employment authorization.” It is imperative that employers complete the Form I-9 when hiring an individual. When processing new employees please remember to always use the most recent Form I-9.
The primary update is the introduction of the “E-Verify” program, which allows qualified employers to virtually examine I-9 documents as an alternative to doing so physically. However, physical examination is still the primary procedure.
To learn more about the Form I-9, the E-Verify program, and any other updates, see the USCIS website.
