Rep. Jeff Crank visits Patty Jewett Golf Course

Sep 30, 2026

Grassroots Ambassador Jeff Wichman recently found a creative way to bring congressional engagement into a First Green field trip at Patty Jewett Golf Course in Colorado Springs.

Wichman hosted 65 fourth-grade students from Keller Elementary for a hands-on First Green event, which also provided an opportunity to connect with elected officials. Representative Jeff Crank (R-CO) joined the event, along with Jill Haffley, a candidate for Colorado House District 16, and a staff member from the office of state Sen. Tony Exum (D-CO). Wichman was also joined by fellow Ambassador Aaron Fankhauser, CGCS; GCSAA Advocacy Specialist Kelly Lonker; and Jennifer Cassell.

During the visit, Wichman highlighted Patty Jewett’s use of recycled, non-potable water, irrigation practices, water conservation efforts and best management practices. The group also toured the First Green event, showcasing how golf courses can support STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) education, workforce development and environmental stewardship in their communities.

The visit Wichman hosted is a great example of how ambassador engagement doesn’t always have to look like a traditional congressional meeting. By inviting elected officials onto the golf course, Grassroots Ambassadors can build relationships while giving policymakers a firsthand look at the industry and the issues that matter to golf courses.

The field trip at Patty Jewett Golf Course along with one held the next day at Settlers Bay Golf Club in Wasilla, Alaska, hosted by 28-year GCSAA member Amos Stephens, propelled First Green participation to more than 30,000 students.
